The Palouse is a photographer’s dream. With its graphic landscapes, character-filled barns, rolling hills, a fence made of metal wheels, a giant waterfall, and old cemeteries, the possibilities are endless. You can easily spend the day driving the backroads without running out of subjects to photograph. All these features make the rolling hills of The Palouse a bucket-list destination for many photographers.
I have been visiting the Palouse for nearly 30 years and leading photo workshops there for nearly 20 years, and it remains one of my favourite places to photograph. The Palouse can vary each year; crops rotate, barns collapse, and you will hear about locations you have never been to. Each year, you will return with images of things you have never seen before.
During the workshop, I will assist you with the finer points of landscape photography, such as hyperfocal focusing, using graduated filters, setting up panoramas, and fine-tuning your compositions. I will also guide you in employing digital techniques such as blending for exposure and focus, as well as planning shots with the digital darkroom in mind.
We will shoot at sunrise and sunset, and during the day, we will have classroom/critique sessions (and naps; you will definitely need naps at this time of year). Classroom sessions will also include tips on using Lightroom and other digital tools.
What a typical day might look like:
Mornings come early at this time of year, so we will often leave before dawn to catch the first light on the rolling hills. After our morning shoot, we will return to our hotel for a break, during which you will have time to have breakfast (or a second breakfast) and download your images. We will also gather during the day for critiques and lessons on photographic techniques and digital processing. In the late afternoon, we’ll head out again for our sunset shoot.
