Alaska Whales and Glaciers Photography Workshop • USA July 2022 By Arizona Highways PhotoScapes

The crown jewel of Southeast Alaska situated on the northwestern end of the North American mainland has it all: Towering mountains, glaciers and fjords teeming with land and marine wildlife. Nestled in the world’s largest temperate rainforest, our base will be Juneau and nearby Auke Bay – arguably the prettiest setting of all 50 state capitals with its eclectic mix of Victorian charm and a port town vibe with cruise ships lighting the harbor in the short summer dusk.

Our tour is timed to capture maximum humpback whale activity where we will possibly see and photograph breaching whales and bubble net feeding from our private boat charter with our knowledgeable lifelong resident boat captains. This time of year is also slightly past peak wildflower and fireweed season.

One day will be spent exploring and photographing Tracy Arm and Sawyer Glaciers, again by private boat charter. Tracy Arm is Yosemite on the water with 4 thousand feet vertical granite cliffs towering above the fjord with waterfalls, eagles and mountain goat sightings possible. Icebergs from Sawyer Glacier display the most colorful blue ice seen anywhere.

Mendenhall Glacier is an easily accessible photo icon that can be seen from afar with fields of fireweed in the foreground as well as up close either by trail or helicopter access. We will be spending time on the glacier looking for spectacular ice caves to photograph with a local expert guide. Though the approach through the rainforest can be long, the actual hiking on the low-angle part of the glacier can be quite manageable.

When not out on a special photo charter, the isolated road system in the vicinity provides access to stunning mountain landscapes with wildflowers, lakes and rainforest as our foregrounds to work sunrises and sunsets.

Here in the Tongass, America’s largest national forest, Sitka spruce trees are 200 feet tall for a reason and one should not discount the powerful moody beauty of the rainforest when shroud in multiple layers of deeply textured low clouds dancing among the steep mountain ravines. Equally possible are delightful warm sunny bright days with amazing blue marine waters that sit in stark contrast to the temperate rainforest and the ice of Mendenhall Glacier.
